The Oscars were held in Hollywood with La La Land announced as the best film winner of 2017 on Sunday night – but then to everyone’s shock had to be handed over to Moonlight after a mistake was noticed in what was the most dramatic moment in the history of the Academy Awards.
In a dramatic twist, the La La Land team were on stage and halfway through their victory speeches when it was noticed that the wrong film name had been read out by Warren Beatty and that Moonlight was actually the winner.
What makes it even worse is that it wasn’t Warren Beatty’s fault — they gave him an envelope that said “Emma Stone, La La Land“.
“There’s a mistake. Moonlight, you won best picture,” Jordan Horowitz, La La Land producer, announced to the gasps of a shocked crowd. He held up the card clearly showing the winner was Moonlight.
PricewaterhouseCoopers, the accountancy firm that has overseen the counting of the Oscars ballots for 83 years, issued an apology saying the presenters “had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered, was immediately corrected.”
They said an investigation is now underway to determine how it happened and how the normal fail safes came a cropper.
